WIN FOR MENS 3

Jan

CROSTYX II      2 - 2    MENS I

With Thurrock run of injuries taking its toll on first team players and Crostyx heavily strengthening their second team this was always going to be a tight game. Thurrock started the brighter of the two teams having some excellent chances but the striking trio of Matt Gaut, Christian Jenkins and returning Captain Steve Abbott just could not convert them. As the game went on Crostyx became stronger and won two short corners and converted them to put the home side 2–0 up. Thurrock finished the first half under pressure but Gary Ginsburgh, Tommy Ing and Luke Danbrook stayed strong to hold out until half time.

After a stern team talk Thurrock came out fighting in the second half, the midfield of Kyle Taylor and Nick Stapleton worked hard and it started to pay off. Tees were awarded a short corner and Matthew Gaut drag flicked the ball into the top corner to put the away side back into contention. Thurrock then kept on pressing and putting the opposition under pressure but just could not find the finishing touch. With the last move of the game some slick passing between Dec Millane and Matt Gaut allowed Millane to square the ball for captain and man of the match Steve Abbott to score his first goal of the season to put the two teams level.

COLCHESTER III      3 - 1     MENS II

Thurrock had the best of the opening 15 minutes and did not allow Colchester to put any attacks together but with most of the possession they could not find a way through the Colchester defence. It was the home side that did start the scoring with a breakaway goal that stunned the Thurrock side, the goal gave the home side confidence and it was now wave after wave of attacks but  some fine saves from captain Keith Mager and defending from Sam Webb frustrated the attackers. Just before half time Michael Hewing converted a short corner to bring the scores back level with a unstoppable strike. Both teams looked to take the lead in the second half and both had chances to do that but it was Colchester that scored two goals in the last 10 minutes to take all three points.

MENS III   4 - 2     BRENTWOOD VI

Thurrock started this East Division 8SE game with only 10 men and found themselves behind in the first minute when a defensive mix-up allowed the Brentwood forward to run unchallenged into the area and shoot past Danny Hick. Once they were at full strength, Thurrock began to link passes together and Michael Fleming collected a pass from Himesh Patel and dribbled through the defence before slipping the ball past the advancing keeper. A threatening attack by Brentwood was cut out by Declan Salmon and the ball was hit out to Freddy Taylor who made a speedy run on the right before passing inside to Jimmy Venus who hammered the ball into the net. A half time substitution saw Lawrence Jackson play his first game of the season and within 5 minutes he made an impact by collecting a pass from Josh Bridges and weaving through the Brentwood defence before flicking into the roof of the net. Thurrock were dominating the game and the Brentwood keeper was forced into a string of acrobatic saves to prevent further score. Mid way through the half, a breakaway by Brentwood led to the award of a short corner. The shot was stopped but crept over the line to the dismay of the Thurrock defence. Thurrock worked hard and a tackle from Ethan Pinion on the Thurrock 25 metre line led to the ball being quickly slipped to Dave Everett who played a one-two with Josh Bridges before passing wide to Freddy Taylor who beat the full back and cut into the D and passed to Fleming who scored to make the final score 4-2.

DRAW FOR LADIES 3

Jan

COLCHESTER 5th   3 - 1    MENS 3

This was a very physical game in East Division 8SE with both teams desperate for points to maintain their push for promotion. The game moved rapidly from end to end with both keepers being forced to make strong saves. Mid way through the half an attack by Colchester was cut out by Declan Salmon and the ball moved rapidly up the field to Jimmy Venus who dribbled through the defence before passing for Ricky Smith to slip the ball inside the post. Despite heavy pressure, the Thurrock defence held strong to maintain the lead up to half time. A reorganisation by the home side led to them attacking strongly and equalising after 10 minutes.  Buoyed by their success, Colchester dominated the game and Thurrock were forced to defend in numbers with Danny Hick having to pull off a number of athletic saves. Thurrock gradually worked their way back into the game and Josh Brody made a break on the left before crossing into the D to Venus whose shot went inches wide. A strong run from half way by Michael Fleming led to a shot which the keeper had to dive full length to push around the post. When Venus received was dismissed for decent, Thurrock were slow to reorganise and Colchester took full advantage to take the lead. Thurrock were then reduced to 9 men as Fleming received a yellow card for aggression and had to pull everyone back to try to repel the incessant Colchester attacks. Although Thurrock worked hard with Salmon making a string of outstanding clearances, the task proved too much and with 5 minutes to go, Colchester added a 3rd goal.

REDBRIDGE     2 - 2     LADIES 3

The ladies started the game with 10 players and very quickly showed immense determination and skill that caused an experienced Redbridge team to call upon all of their reserves to keep a clean sheet. Emma Grant and Sue Beardwell worked excellently together and caused ‘mayhem’ for the opposition. Nicky Smith supported the attack well and was unlucky not to score.

Thurrock regained 1 player and then after reshuffling were so unlucky to go 1 goal down from a well worked short corner. Just before half time T’s numbers swelled to 12. This timely arrived spurred on the team and a well won ball by Grace Millane put Amy Beadle into an excellent position to deftly pass to captain Jackie Simmonds who fired in a shot only to see it saved but Simmonds picked up the clearance and fired home to bring the score to 1-1.

The 2nd half was equally thrilling and end to end hockey was played in good spirits. The ladies found themseleves a goal behind again but to their credit the defence was solid with player of the match Abbie Pollock thwarting so many of the Redbridge attacks. T’s were rewarded when Simmonds took a free hit quickly catching the defence’napping’ and slipped the ball through to Chloe Brady who neatly placed the ball past the stranded keeper.

Ladies are looking strong and the team spirit is exceptional !

East London 1 - 3 Thurrock Mens 1XI

Going into the winter break the Tee's knew this was a must win game against a team who are always strong. With a depleted squad 2 players stepped up and with dogged determination earnt their spots.

The game started with both teams hitting each other on the counter attack with the Tee's free flowing passing coming from Dan O'Shaughnessy, Ben Knowles, Sandeep Gahir & Andre Rudder feeding the front 3 of Matt Gaut, Christian Jenkins & Mike Murray. All of the Tee's goals came in the first half with Matt Gaut bagging 2 and Christian 1.

The second half started with the home side battering the Tee's defence of Tommy Ing, Gary Ginsburgh and Nick Stapleton. The Tee's took the pressure in their stride with some help from the Liam O'Keefe and Andy Sargeant.

The Tee's gave away too many short corners and eventually the numbers showed and gave the home side some hope of getting back in the game with a well worked short corner. The Tee's held out to take the win, even with the home side pushing all out for the last 10 minutes, but everything that made it past the defence couldn't get past the man of the match Andy Gaut in the Tee's net.

Mens 3 XI      1 - 2      Old Loughtonians Academy

The timing of this game and lack of players in higher teams meant that Thurrock were forced to field a weakened team for this Div 8SE fixture.

The visitors however did not experience similar problems and contained a number of very experienced players. From the start Loughts mounted a strong attack and went into the lead after 10 minutes from a reverse stick shot  from the edge of the D which flew into the roof of the net leaving keeper Keith Mager rooted to the spot.

Academy continued to dominate the play forcing the Thurrock defence to work hard to keep them at bay whilst up the front, the attackers saw very little of the ball. Thurrock held fast until half time with centre-back Declan Salmon making some timely tackles to prevent further score. Loughtonians continued to pile on the pressure after the break and added to their score from a short corner.

Thurrock eventually got onto the score sheet when Jimmy Venus intercepted a Loughtonians pass and moved quickly up the field before passing for Michael Fleming to score. This inspired Thurrock and they began to match the visitors with a series of attacks but were thwarted by the in-form Loughtonians keeper. In the last 10 minutes any further hope of Thurrock levelling score was reduced when they were reduced to 10 men due to the dismissal of Gary Venus for dissent.

Ladies 2XI

Ladies 2s' game conceded as no umpire arrived for us. Played it as afriendly instead, which was fun. Keeper Kerry Dent came out on pitchfor second half, and Nicole Brown went in goal. Was a good giggle andfinished off with delicious pasta. Thanks Ladies 2s for all your efforts for part one of the season. I am sure part two will be just aseventful! Have a great Christmas break.

WITHAM I      3 - 6      MENS I

Thurrock travelled to second in the league Witham as underdogs but with an early hat-trick from Sandeep Gahir gave Thurrock a first half lead of 3-0. In the first 10 minutes of the second half Kyle Taylor scored a quick double to give the visitors a 5-0 lead. Witham hit back hard and finally found a way through but Matt Gaut then scored again for Thurrock to restore the five goal lead. Two consolation goals for the home side restored a bit of pride

UPMINSTER III     2 - 2     MENS II

Thurrock faced a tricky away encounter against an Upminster side, looking to pick up from where they left off last week. Tees started cautiously with a few stray passes and were not doing much when in possession and paid the price when Upminster

went 1-0 up. This seemed to stir Thurrock from their abyss as two minutes later the scores were level through a firmly struck short corner strike from Mike Hewing. There was slight controversy at the close of the first half when a well hit cross into the D was expertly deflected into the roof of the net by Darren Higgins. This was ruled out, however, both umpires had differing opinions as to why. Nevertheless, the first half ended even.

Thurrock looked to take hold of the game in the second half and were applying more pressure to the Upminster defence. Daniel O'Shaughnessy, now back from Frankfurt, calmly slotted the ball in the net with what can only be described as a 'pea-roller' of a shot. Thurrock should have taken the game away from Upminster but a lack of discipline in front of goal cost them dearly when 5 minutes from time Upminster equalised. It could have been worse, had it not been for a brilliant save on the line from Man of the Match Sam Webb. Tees walked away with a draw and will need to put in an improved performance against league leaders East London next week.

MENS III     2 - 3     OLD SOUTHENDIANS V

This was a game which Thurrock should have won but they failed to reach their high standard which has seen them maintain second place in Division 8 SE. After five minutes an attack by Southend was not cleared and a half-hit shot crept over the line from close range. Thurrock worked hard and Michael Fleming collected a pass from Josh Brody and dribbled around the keeper to level the score after 15 minutes. Thurrock had the majority of the play but were unable to convert their dominance into goal with several shots going wide. In the second half Thurrock continued to pressurise the Old Southendian defence and eventually went into the lead from a Jimmy Venus shot from the edge of the area.  Five minutes later a goal-bound shot was stopped by a defenders foot and Thurrock were awarded a penalty. However, Jimmy Venus was unable to add to Thurrock’s lead when his flick was saved by the keeper.  This inspired the visitors and they changed their formation to put more pressure on Thurrock’s defence, which produced an equaliser when a shot from the right of the D deflected off keeper Dave Leeks stick and fell kindly for an attacker to level the score. Thurrock pushed forward but left themselves open to a breakaway by Southend and a mishit clearance led to Thurrock conceding a short corner which crept inside the post to give the visitors a winning goal in the last minute.

MINIS

Thurrock Hockey Club’s Mini section played their fourth tournament of the season at Palmers College on Sunday 4th December. The Under 10 and Under 12 boys and girls teams played counterparts from Tower Hamlets, Maldon and Old Southendians. There were mixed fortunes for the Under 10’s, the girls were unlucky to lose 0-1, 0-1 and draw 0-0. The Under 10 boys won all three of their games 1-0, 1-0 and a convincing 5-1 with some really impressive team play and unselfish passing throughout. The scorers for the boys were Alex Farrow 4 , Ben Bridger 2 and Jamie Speers 1.

MENS I        1 - 4      OLD SOUTHENDIANS I

The mens injury problems continue apace with Liam O'Reem dislocating his shoulder and having a ride in an ambulance to hospital. With three players missing through injury and four others unavailable it seems that nothing can go right for the Mens 1 side. The good news is that captain Steve Abbott, recovering from an operation on his leg, had a run out for the Seconds and came through unscathed and Andy Sargeant had the plaster removed from his ankle, hopefully making a return in the New Year. The game against Old Southendians I ended with a 1-4 defeat with Christian Jenkins scoring T's consolation goal late in the game after dominating the visitors for the last 20 minutes. Man of the Match was Tommy Ing.

MENS II    5 - 3     OLD SOUTHENDIANS

The Seconds played a mid table clash against old Southendians, winning by 5 goals to 3 to leapfrog their opponents in Division 5SE. Darren Higgins scored a hat trick, while Liam Birch and Steve Abbott got a goal each. Man of the match was Jordan salmon.

PHOENIX III     3 - 4     MENS III

Thurrock went into the lead after only five minutes when Michael Fleming played a one-two move with Ricky Smith to beat the Braintree defence before hammering the ball into the net. A run on the left by Josh Brody led to a pass to Freddie Taylor who dribbled into the D and played a measured pass which Ricky Smith pushed over the line before the keeper could react. Within five minutes, Phoenix got onto the score-sheet with an attack down the right. The ball appeared to have been over hit but the speedy winger pulled it across the area for a forward to beat debut keeper Joe Harvey at the far post. The game flowed from end to end with both teams squandering chances before Jimmy Venus maintained his goal-a game record when wrong-footed the full back before scoring with a reverse-stick shot. In the second half Phoenix reorganised their formation and had more of the play putting in a series of shots which Harvey had to work hard to keep out. Thurrock weathered the onslaught and Gary Venus moved the ball up the field before passing out to Smith who quickly slipped the ball for Fleming to get his second goal. With 10 minutes to go Thurrock had the smell of victory in their nostrils and pushed forward. Unfortunately a quickly taken free hit by Phoenix led to a breakaway and a three-man attack. Although Harvey saved the initial shot, the rebound fell kindly for the second man to push the ball over the line. This inspired the home side and they pushed forward to dominate the Thurrock defence to soon added to their score from a well-taken short corner. In the last minute Phoenix mounted a strong attack which led to a flicked shot which was destined for the top corner of the goal but Harvey capped his man of the match display by diving across to push it around the post.

TUNBRIDGE WELLS I      2 - 0     LADIES I

Much to the credit of the captains the ladies section managed to field all three teams despite a huge amount of illness, unavailablity and injury!

Thurrock Firsts were without at least five of their regular team but put up a strong fight and unfortunately were only beaten by two set routines at short corners. Katie Lawrence had a fine game and proved her worth as an up and coming first teamer. Captain Tess Ing inspired the team with her continued running and encouragement.

HAVERING II     5 - 0       LADIES II

The Seconds were without four key players and unfortunately had to play with 10 and relied upon players arriving from the previous Third team match! It was a credit to the captain Fay Tuffee who skilfully managed a new look team. The first half saw the girls compete excellently and it was to the credit of the new look defence: Liz Grey, Deb Blaimey and Lisa Simmonds that held the strong Havering side 0-0 at half time. Unfortunately the second half proved to be exhausting and despite stirling work from captain Tuffee the ladies could not halt the onslaught which resulted in five goals being put past the hardworking keeper Kerry Dent.

LADIES III       2 - 1      MALDON & LITTLE BADDOW II

The ladies Thirds are having a tough season and just manging to field a team most weeks and as a result of this are sitting uncomfortably at the bottom of division with only having won one game. It looked as though this game was to be cancelled but at the ‘eleventh hour’ new players were found and ‘old players’ returned! The Ladies with a brand new look team ran out convincing 2-1 winners against Maldon. Sarah Judd rallied the girls early in the game and her inspirational running made the team realise that they could win. Newcomer Nicky Smith worked excellently with Judd and she was involved with both of the T’s goals. One being an own goal and player of the match Abbie Pollock scoring the other.

Maldon came back with force and T’s soaked up the pressure well with Sandra Hockley, returning after 20 years, making an outstanding contribution. The defence was a family affair with Hockley, her sister, captain Jackie Simmonds and her daughter Lisa Simmonds all working well led by the ever reliable Debbie Lakey proved to be too strong for the determined Maldon attack. The goal came through a penalty flick.

The ladies section hope to return to fuller strength next week

THURROCK MENS II     1 - 1     PHOENIX II

Phoenix, with seven wins in eight games this season, might have expected an easy three points at Palmer’s on Saturday afternoon, but when the Tees put out their strongest line up they are a match for any side in Division 5SE.

The first half was goalless, but either side could have led at the break. On another day the home forwards Darren Higgins and Dec Millane would have had at least a goal each. With Sam Webb now a regular fixture in the 2s, Mike Hewing has been enjoying his new role in midfield, and it was he who was creating most of the 2s' opportunities.

Phoenix made the most of a two on one situation early on in the second period to take the lead, but it was Thurrock who controlled the play for the majority of the half. The midfield quartet of Hewing, Jordan Salmon, Dan O’Shaughnessy and Jeff West were winning the ball back every time Phoenix tried to clear their lines, but Ash Snell up front, on for the injured Millane, and Higgins couldn’t find a way past the excellent visiting goalkeeper.

With 15 minutes left on the clock, Hewing blasted the ball goalwards from a penalty corner, finally beating the goalie and giving Thurrock hope of what would be a deserved victory.

Tees made several more chances, another Hewing strike from a penalty corner beating the keeper but being cleared off the line, and three or four being hit just wide of the post, but couldn’t get a winner. Sam Webb was again voted man of the match, but that could have gone to any one of five or six players, such was the quality of the hockey on display.

THURROCK MENS III     7 - 1      BRENTWOOD ACADEMY

Thurrock began strongly and went into the lead after five minutes when Ricky Smith beat the defender and slipped the ball for Josh Brody to beat the keeper from close range. Thurrock maintained their pressure and Liam Birch collected the ball on the half-way line and ran the length of the pitch before hammering the ball into the net from the edge of the D. Brentwood began to link passes together and threatened the Thurrock defence but some strong tackles by Neil Donovan and George McAllister ensured that keeper Mark Harvey was untroubled. With five minutes to go to half-time, Michael Fleming converted a pass from Jimmy Venus.

Thurrock increased their pressure in the second half when Himesh Patel moved into midfield and Fleming joined the attack. This produced a goal after five minutes when a cross by Gary Venus was nudged over the line by Josh Brody. Within minutes Fleming seized on a Brentwood clearance and went around the keeper for his second goal.

A rare Brentwood attack produced a free hit on the 25 metre line which was not cleared allowing the winger to ghost in and score inside the far post. This spurred Thurrock back to life and Fleming claimed his hat-trick when he received a pass from Dave Everett and flicked into the net. In the final minutes Jimmy Venus maintained his goal-a- game record when he drew the keeper before hammering the ball into the net.

NOV 12: WINS FOR LADIES 1 AND MENS 3

Nov
LADIES II      1 -  2   PHOENIX 2
Thurrock were playing one of the top teams in the league and were a bit unsure how hard this game would be. Tees fielded a strong team that had bonded well over the last few games.
Thurrock pressured Phoenix from the start, knowing that they had to be strong and play hard. It was a very attacking game from both sides, with short corners being awarded at both ends. The first goal of the match came from one of these short corners, hit hard out by Karen Lucking, followed by a cracking shot from Sally Willett. Half time came seeing Thurrock leading one nil.
Second half started well for Phoenix with them scoring at the whistle. This woke up the Thurrock side and made them more determined to get something from the game.
From a long corner, Sally Willett found Fay Tuffee at the top of the circle, who rolled the ball inside the D and shot with Lauren Marshall deflecting the ball into the net. They thought they had taken the lead but an adamant Phoenix umpire said it was no goal, which shocked Thurrock.
With their heads still held high, the home side continued the match creating more chances, but it was to be Phoenix day when a penalty flick was awarded which found the back of the net.
Thurrock deserved more from this game, and even though they had lost, they showed how far they have come as a team and that they can challenge any team they face. A very positive game for all players.

BISHOP STORTFORD     7 - 0      THURROCK MENS I

Tees had an unlucky result against a fast moving Bishop Stortford side with a 7-0 loss. Bishop Stortford started strongly with two goals in the first 10 minutes and they persistently pressed the Thurrock goal line. However, once settled into the pace of the game, Thurrock began to look dangerous with some good counter attacking plays. Some excellent distribution from Kyle Taylor and Sandeep Gahir were providing excellent distribution to the wingers; Man of the Match Liam O'Reem and right half Nick Stapleton were making some excellent offensive runs. The second half saw a new and refreshed Thurrock side playing some good 1-2 hockey, however failing to capitalise on despite excellent movement and opportunities generated by Matt Gaut. Andy Gaut persistently endeavoured to keep the Bishops Stortford strikers from increasing the score line but some fast breaks left the Thurrock goalie exposed.

SOUTHEND II      3 - 2      THURROCK MENS II

Off the back of last week’s 11-2 victory, the 2s travelled to fourth placed Southend with high hopes of an upset. Thurrock started strongly but were lucky not to concede in the first five minutes when the home side broke quickly, but failed to get the ball past goalie Keith Mager’s outstretched foot. Southend though did take the lead some 10 minutes later, and took a one goal lead into the break. The blues then doubled their lead early in the second half before Thurrock mounted a comeback. Christian Jenkins, playing against his former club, grabbed a quick brace to give the visitors hope for an unlikely, and to be honest undeserved away win. Southend’s third goal hurt the 2s more than any other, as the defence were expecting a free hit for a foot which the umpires failed to see, however when nobody closed down the blue’s number 11 he was handed an opportunity he wasn’t going to turn down and restored the advantage. Thurrock could have snatched a point when they were awarded a penalty flick in the last 10 minutes, but the keeper pulled off a great save from Dec Millane’s attempt. The Tees had no arguments at the result, and know that they will need to perform at their best if they are to seriously trouble the teams at the top of Division 5SE.

UPMINSTER VI      2 - 6     MENS III
Thurrock pushed forward from the start of this Division 8SE game but went behind after only five minutes following a breakaway by Upminster. The home side doubled their score soon afterwards from a well-taken short corner which beat keeper Dave Leeks. Thurrock were stirred into action and Matthew Skinner made a run on the left wing before passing to Ricky Smith who hammered the ball into the D for Josh Brady to score from close range. Thurrock reorganised their formation in the second half with Michael Fleming moving into midfield to allow Himesh Patel to push forward. Within five minutes a run up the wing by Dave Everett led to a cross which Jimmy Venus deflected past the keeper to level the score. Upminster worked hard to reclaim the lead but were thwarted by strong defensive work by Declan Salmon and George McAllister. Liam Birch turned the game around by moving the ball up the field and passing to Brady to get his second goal. Thurrock began to dominate the game and Fleming got onto the score sheet when, with his back to goal, he received a pass from Gary Venus before turning and slipping the ball between keeper and post. Thurrock were playing some excellent hockey and an attack by the home side was intercepted by Leeks who kicked the ball out to Gary Venus who passed for Jimmy Venus to dribble around the keeper and get his second and Thurrock’s fifth goal. In the final minutes, Ricky Smith played a one-two with Himesh Patel before hammering past the keeper to cap an excellent performance by Thurrock.

THURROCK MEN’S I      2 - 6     SAFFRON WALDEN I
This was always going to be a tough game for Thurrock against the league leaders and they know why they were top of the league with some clinical finishing to go 2-0 up early in the game to stung the home side. Thurrock started to put some pressure on the opposition defence but couldn't get any shots on goal. Soon after Saffron Walden broke to go 3-0 up just before half time, Matt Gaut deflected the ball past the keeper to put Thurrock back into the game. Early in the second half Walden made it 4-1 but soon after Tommy Ing pulled one back with a well taken short corner. As the home side pushed to get another goal Saffron Walden scored twice to end the game 6-2.

THURROCK MEN’S II      11 - 2      BRENTWOOD IV

This fixture last season was the title decider between the two best teams in Division 6SE. This time around, with both teams closer to the bottom than the top of Division 5SE, the result was just as important, but for very different reasons. After an initial Brentwood attack, the Thurrock defence of Gary Ginsburgh, Chris Smith and Mike Hewing were hardly troubled. The tees midfield simply did not allow the visitors to string two passes together, let alone mount an attack. The 2s were nothing short of magnificent, summed up by the fourth goal when Ginsburgh found Mike Hewing free on the right. Turning defence into attack, man of the match Hewing powered forward over the half way line before spotting Michael Murray in front of the keeper. A 40 yard pass straight to Murray’s stick still left last season’s top scorer with plenty to do, but with one touch the ball found it’s way past the stranded goalie and nestled in the bottom corner. An early contender for goal of the season, and just one of four for Murray. New boy Liam O’Keefe introduced himself to club chairman Jackie Milne with a superb hattrick and an industrious performance in the midfield.

SAFFRON WALDEN VI    6 - 3     THURROCK MEN’S III

Due to unavailability of several players, a very much weakened Thurrock team began this Division 8SE game and were behind after only 10 minutes when centre-back Dave Leeks was unable to cut out a speedy attack and the ball just evaded a diving Declan Salmon to enter the net. Thurrock fought back and an attack by Ricky Smith down the right produced a pass for Liam Birch to play a one-two with Jimmy Venus before shooting inches wide. Thurrock continued to dominate the play and eventually were rewarded when Birch dribbled through the defence before passing for Michael Fleming to level the score. Saffron Walden started the second half strongly and soon went into the lead from a short corner. This stimulated the home side and they attacked and added two more goals in quick succession to make it 4-1. Thurrock however were not prepared to concede without a fight and Dave Everett made a strong run on the left before playing to Birch who smashed the ball into the D for Josh Brady to get his first Thurrock goal. Unfortunately Thurrock relaxed and allowed Saffron Walden back into the game for their fifth goal from a short corner. With five minutes to go, a quickly taken free-hit inside the Thurrock 25 yard line produced a sixth goal. With the final whistle looming, Thurrock were awarded a free-hit which was taken by Fleming and passed to Jimmy Venus who went around the defender to give Thurrock a richly deserved third goal.

BRENTWOOD III    2 - 4     THURROCK LADIES II

Still on a high from their win last week, Thurrock were looking to keep on the winning road at a late kick off in Brentwood. From the whistle Thurrock were on the attack and showed how well the team has bonded over the last few weeks. Quick passing between Charlotte Adnams and Katie Lawrence up the left and Karen Lucking and Debra Blamey up the right created shape and attacking opportunities for the team. With crosses coming in like bullets, it would not be long before forwards Nicole Brown and Sue Clive would add a notch on the backboard of the goal. Brentwood attacked in numbers, which called for some tough defending from Liz Gray, Leah Purser and Sally Willett. This created space for Thurrock to lead an attack in reply, and with so much room to play in meant a goal was on its way.
The goals came with two things, speed and quality. By half time Thurrock were four up but knew this game was not over yet.
The second half saw Brentwood had a new lease of life. Not only did their team seem more determined to get something from the match, but also their sideline supporters seemed to give them belief. Thurrock had to battle hard to try to keep Brentwood at bay but the home team managed to gain two goals back which put added pressure on Thurrock to see this game out.
Fantastic support on the sideline for Thurrock gave them the team spirit they needed to see the game to the end and the score remained at 4-2 thanks to some truly classy saves from keeper Kelly Bentley. Goalscorers - Karen Lucking, Charlotte Adnams, Nicole Brown and Sue Clive.

WAPPING II     2 - 1      THURROCK

Thurrock went into the game full of confidence after after last week's win but it was Wapping that had the better start and looked dangerous from the off. The Thurrock defence stood firm to stop the Wapping attacks but eventually the home side took the lead from a short corner. Tees respond well and started to put some attacks together and Matt Gaut was put through on goal only to be fouled by the goalkeeper, Tommy Ing then had his well struck short corner saved by the goalkeeper, just before half-time Sandeep Gahir kept his composure to slot the ball past the goalkeeper to make it 1-1. The second half was more even with both teams looking to take the lead but the Thurrock defence and man of the match Andy Sargeant were organised to stop any attacks. With 15 minutes to go Wapping were awarded a penalty flick that they scored to go 2-1 up. The remainder for the game Thurrock dominated play looking for the equalising goal but eventually run out of time.

Next week Thurrock host West Herts at Palmers College at 12.30

WAPPING VI     0 - 2      THURROCK II

Three games into the season, and with just a point to show for their efforts, the 2s were beginning to wonder where their first win would come from. Little did they expect that it would come from a visit to their old tormentors Wapping. Two seasons ago, when the sides were last in the same division, this tie would have had home win written all over it, but Thurrock are a much stronger club now, and with young players like George Horgan and man of the match Sam Webb emerging, they are likely to get stronger. From the off Webb looked as though he had been playing at this level for years, his clean tackling, determination, and pace was just what the Tees had been lacking, and he gelled immediately with right half Jeff West, the two interchanging regularly to confuse the Wapping midfield.

Dec Millane made a welcome return to the 2s front line, getting into dangerous positions, but failing to get the final shot off on too many occasions. Darren Higgins should have put Thurrock ahead but was thwarted by the onrushing keeper.

It was left to Jordan Salmon to put the 2s ahead in a game for the first time this season, lifting the ball into the top corner from a short corner.

The half time team talk was a much easier one for skipper Keith Mager to give than in previous weeks, just keep doing what you’ve been doing and they won’t score, and that’s exactly what his team did. Wapping didn’t threaten the goal once in the second half, whereas Thurrock pressed for the full 35 minutes. Millane eventually got his stick to the ball in front of goal, giving the keeper no chance, and taking the result beyond doubt.

Thurrock face Maldon & Little Baddow at Palmer’s on Saturday.

THURROCK III      4 - 1     SOUTHEND III

From the start Thurrock went onto the attack and went into the lead after five minutes when Josh Bradley collected a pass from Himesh Patel and beat the Southend right back before passing for Dave Leeks to score. Thurrock maintained their momentum and a shot by Ricky Smith from the edge of the D was saved by the keeper but Jimmy Venus pounced on the rebound and put the ball into the net. Two substitutions at half time saw Southend come out much stronger and after 45 minutes they were rewarded by a goal when a Thurrock defender was caught in possession and the ball deflected off the post past keeper Danny Hick. Thurrock were spurred into action and Matthew Skinner (right) made a weaving run on the right before entering the D and hammering the ball towards the goal. As the keeper moved across to cover the shot, Gary Venus deflected it into the roof of the net. Thurrock increased their lead when a shot by Jimmy Venus was stopped on the line by a defender’s foot, Venus took the penalty flick for his second goal. Five minutes from time Jimmy Venus was unlucky not to get his hat-trick when his shot shaved the outside of the post. Thurrock now have two weeks without a game due two team missing from their league.

THURROCK     6 - 2     CROSTYX

Thurrock Mens 1st team lined up against Crostyx II without their captain Steve Abbott recovering from a vital early season operation, however this did not stop the team romping to victory over challenging opposition. They started with purpose bagging three goals in the first 10 minutes. Matty Gaut bagging a brace and one from man of the match Christian Jenkins. Such was their dominance that they could have had easily doubled the score but that was it until half time. After the break Crosytx upped the pace and scored quickly before the Tees restored the three goal advantage through Matt Lever. There was even more time for two more goals from Thurrock before the end of the game with Matt Lever completing a double and Matty Gaut completed his hatrick. The game ended with Thurrock winning comfortably 6-2 and are fourth in the table.

On Saturday they are away to Wapping II at 1 pm

THURROCK II     1 - 2    COLCHESTER III

The 2s are still searching for their first win in Div 5SE after another closely fought but ultimately disappointing game at Palmer’s College on Saturday afternoon.

Thurrock were without four regulars from their starting line up, so had to promote from the 3s and 4s, and although the team played well and created more opportunities than Colchester, the visiting defence were extremely well drilled.

Colchester were one up at half time, but Mike Hewing pulled the Tees back level early on in the second half from a penalty corner. For the third game in a row, the 2s were the stronger side in the second half, but again failed to capitalise on their dominance. Liam Birch was creating chances from the middle of the pitch, but without their usual forward line up they couldn’t find the net again. With 10 minutes left on the clock Colchester countered quickly and restored their advantage, knocking the wind out of Thurrock’s sails.

The 2s visit Wapping IV on Saturday afternoon at 2.30 pm.

BRENTWOOD V       1 - 2     THURROCK III

The score does not reflect this Division 8SE game in which Thurrock dominated from the first whistle. After 10 minutes Jimmy Venus collected a pass from Tom Archer and went around the keeper before putting the ball into the net.  Thurrock maintained their pressure and Josh Brady was unlucky not to add to the score when he made a solo run from the half way line and beat the keeper only to see his shot graze the outside of the post. Within minutes Brady seized on a mishit clearance and dribbled through the defence to shoot. However he was thwarted by the diving keeper’s outstretched stick. Tom Madden made a strong run on the right and centred for Mat Skinner to slip the ball to Venus whose shot was deflected wide. In the second half a rare Brentwood breakaway found Thurrock pushing too far up the field and although Danny Hick saved the initial shot, the rebound fell kindly for an attacker to level the score. This spurred Brentwood and they attacked in numbers, however full back Sam Webb was alert and made a series of important tackles to repel the threat. Thurrock regained the upper hand and pressurised the home defence who held out until the sixtieth minute when Venus received a pass from Himesh Patel and flicked the ball into the top corner of the net for his second goal to seal Thurrock’s victory

The Thirds are home at Palmers to Southend III, 11 am pushback

THURROCK ACADEMY     1 - 2     REDBRIDGE & ILFORD ACADEMY

Thurrock’s new Men’s Academy team did not get off to the best of starts against Redbridge and Ilford and conceded an early goal after 10 minutes.

But they recovered to play some good hockey with Liam Birch scoring the equaliser just before half time. With great effort from the Thurrock midfield, man of the match Josh Bridges pushed Thurrock forward, with some great chances from Freddie Taylor and Byron Woods, but to no result. With 10 minutes to spare the opposition beat the defence to score the winner. The Academy team is still looking for their first win of the season with the score finishing 1-2.

This Saturday the Academy are away to Saffron Walden 7, 10

BRENTWOOD I 5 - 1 THURROCK I

Tees went into the second game of the season on a high after beating East London at home 1-0. This weeks game was played in 29 degree heat and with some pace, with both teams defending off the counter attacks. However it was Brentwood that drew first blood by slotting it past Man of the Match Andy Gaut in goal and that's how it ended at halftime.

The second half saw Tees come out fighting but where thwarted by a resolute home defence. Thurrock where caught out again with two well worked short corners followed by a fierce strike from the top and a close up deflection. They never gave up and where rewarded with a goal two minutes from time.

The Firsts play Crostyx II this Saturday at Palmers, 11 am start

CHELMSFORD IV 1 - 1 THURROCK II

Chelmer Park isn’t a venue where you expect to pick up easy points, and with three 13 year olds making their Second team debut, the Twos would have taken a point before the match begun.

Tees had easily the better start though, and should have taken the lead at least once but failed to put enough pressure on the Chelmsford keeper from a series of penalty corners. Chelmsford broke the deadlock on 25 minutes with a passage which another umpire would have penalised on another day, with a ball lifted close to defender Rick Clubb’s body, play was allowed to go on, and a simple lift over the advancing keeper allowed the home forward to volley home.

With the game being played in the sweltering late summer heat, both sides were grateful for an extended half time break to allow the freshly watered pitch to dry out adequately, however when play was restarted the ball wasn’t rolling as well as it should, and a through ball from Matt Leaver was held up in a puddle before it reached forward Darren Higgins in a dangerous position in front of goal. Undeterred, the Twos pressurised their hosts into a series of defensive mistakes, and surely with a full strength XI would have scored sooner than they did.

The goal came when a goalbound shot was deflected wide by a defender’s foot. Leaver stepped up to take the resulting flick, which he calmly slid under the keeper’s diving body.

The Twos were rightly pleased with their first point of the season, with special praise going to future stars Tom Archer, Byron Wood, Freddie Taylor and George Horgan who never looked out of place playing in NE14 Hockey Division 5SE.

Thurrock entertain Colchester at Palmer’s next week, pushing back at 12.30pm.

THURROCK III 4 - 0 COLCHESTER IV

Thurrock began the game strongly and after five minutes went into the lead when Liam Birch collected the ball on the edge of the 25m line and dribbled through the Colchester defence before slipping it past the advancing keeper. Ten minutes later, Jimmy Venus made it 2-0 when he collected a pass from Himesh Patel and fired into the net from the edge of the area. Colchester drove forward from the restart and put together a series of passes which took them into the Thurrock area however right back Sam Webb was alert and dispossessed the centre forward before he could shoot. Colchester were becoming more threatening and keeper Danny Hick was called upon to make a series of saves to thwart the attack.

Five minutes before half time Matthew Skinner made a run on the right before centring for Michael Fleming to round the keeper and make it 3-0. Thurrock continued to play the better hockey in the second half but a strong Colchester defence held them back until, after 60 minutes, Matthew Fleming, playing his first game for two years, seized on a rebounded shot off the keeper and flicked the ball into the net.

THURROCK I     5 - 0      BRENTWOOD

The Ladies First team were able to filed a strong team and were lucky to have a squad of 12 which was very helpful in the heat! They are proving to be exceptionally strong force in this league and yet again came away with another resounding win of 5-0! In the last three games the Ladies have scored 21 goals. The defence remained almost onlookers whilst Ally Bonner (2), Miriam Nicholls (2) and Katie Jacks all got onto the score sheet. All players performed well with Lou Pike having a noteworthy performance.

This Saturday Ladies I away to Blackheath I

REDBRIDGE & ILFORD     5 - 0      THURROCK II

The Ladies Second team were not so fortuitous and were in the position of fielding an exceptionally young and inexperienced team. Captain Charlene Curtis has fought valiantly throughout the week to field a team and despite her inspirational leadership the team lost 5-0. Faye Tuffee was outstanding for the ladies and a true inspiration to her younger teammates.

On Saturday Ladies II are away to Essex University

THURROCK ACADEMY 0 – 0 WALTHAM FOREST IV

Thurrock’s new Men’s 4th team, the Academy side under new captain Dave Everett, got off to a good start against Waltham Forest’s 4th team. An early break by Thurrock nearly resulted in a goal as Byron Wood and Freddie Taylor worked together to break down their opponent’s defence but with no result.

Waltham Forest come back hard but the good work of Thurrock’s defence shone through with an outstanding performance from Sam Webb keeping them out. New Thurrock player and man of the match Josh Brady worked tirelessly to push Thurrock forward in his first ever game. In the end a fair result of two evenly paired teams finished in a goal-less draw for the first game of the season in Div 9SE.

Next Saturday the Academy are away to Witham 4 at 11 am

THURROCK II 1 – 3 EAST LONDON II

THURROCK II 1 – 3 EAST LONDON II

With the first team skipper having an embarrassment of riches to choose from, the 2s were able to field their strongest line up in years. However East London were one of the top sides in NE14 Hockey Division 5SE last season, and turned up to Palmer’s with an equally talented squad.

Thurrock’s defence struggled to get to grips with the visitor’s pacey forwards, and gave away far too many penalty corners in the first period. East London didn’t capitalise on the first four or five, but eventually got one right, slipping the ball back to the injector to tap in easily inside the unguarded near post.

The Tees changed formation in the second half, with centre midfielder Ash Snell’s game coming to an early end due to a muscle pull, and forward Rick Smith coming on to replace him. Thurrock were arguably the better team in the second half, and after a few near misses equalised when Matt Gaut put away a penalty flick.

Thurrock thought that they had taken the lead when Gaut smashed the ball into the keeper’s pads and into the roof of the net from a penalty corner, however the umpire ruled the goal out saying that the strike wasn’t going to hit the backboard before the deflection.

The Londoners were gifted their second goal when a defensive hit out was passed straight to one of their midfielders. A quick lay off to the visiting striker led to a simple pass into the Tees’ goal.

With two minutes left on the clock, and Thurrock in danger of losing for the first time since November 2010, skipper Keith Mager pushed defenders Gary Ginsburgh, Chris Smith and Mike Hewing up to try to grab an equaliser, but a quick counter attack led to East London having a three on one attack, and an easy third goal.

The 2s will be hoping to kick start their season on Saturday when they visit Chelmsford.

Gahir strike wins it for Thurrock

Sep

THURROCK 1 – 0 EAST LONDON

Thurrock went into the season with a new coach and new players to the first team squad, also with a few players out through injury. Thurrock started quick off the blocks attacking the opposition with some fluid passing, although the visitors hit back with some great play of their own forcing Man of the Match Andy Gaut to make some fine saves. The tees and the visitors traded blows right the way to half time.

After the restart the game got sloppy and fragmented with both teams left frustrated with the game. Then que Sandeep Gahir at the short corner to hammer home his first of the season on his league debut. This spurred both teams into action and this lead to a very tense and nervous end to the game with the tees relieved to hear the final whistle.

Sep

SEVENOAKS 4 1 – 4 THURROCK 1

The game started with T’s applying immediate pressure and this spurred on the ladies to completely believe in themselves. Early pressure resulted in Miriam Nicholls setting up a great goal for captain Tessa Ing to hammer home. The second goal came from set play where Sally Ellis was on hand to pick up from yet another fine shot from Ing.

Despite being behind Sevenoaks came back with force but stirling defence from T’s kept the clean sheet until eventually Sevenoaks broke through and narrowed the deficit. At half-time it was 2-1 and the Ladies galvanised their efforts and started the second half in a dominating mood. Good work between Lou Parrott and Katie Jacks saw Jacks put the Ladies further ahead. Strong leadership from Ing inspired some fine attacking play from Jacks and Alison Bonner. Jacks’ running resulted in yet another fine goal for her.

A great start for the Ladies. On Saturday the Firsts are away at Holcombe

WAPPING 4 3 – 1 THURROCK 2

The Ladies begin this season having lost five of their regulars from the previous season. This is a great opportunity for the ‘youngsters ‘ to make their mark. They were also affected by unavailability. Sally Taylor making her debut for the club proved how valuable she is going to be by being the lone goal scorer and also putting in a very good performance in defence and supporting her young team mates. Wapping as usual proved to be a very strong team and the young players all equipped themselves so well.

It was however goalkeeper Kerry Dent who was ‘player of the match’ with a performance that belies her young years. Her starring moment was making a spectacular save from a penalty flick.

Despite the scoreline the ladies must take pride in this fine display.

The Seconds are home to Chelmsford 4 on Saturday, 11 am start

LADIES 3 7 – 1 EAST LONDON 2

The 3rds fielded an exceptionally strong team and certainly stamped their mark on this Div 3 game. The Ladies dominated and East London could only stand and marvel at the speed and skill of the team. Kelly Bentley making her debut in goal was a spectator but on the odd occasion East London broke through she proved her worth by clearing the ball with ease. Abbie Pollock and Rebecca Abiona both making their debuts proved that they will be real assets to the Ladies by playing with confidence and making great contributions.

Sally Willett was unstoppable and caused the opposition immense problems and scored an outstanding hat trick. Becky Grant who as usual never stopped running and picking up those fine passes coming from the defence was running circles around their defence and she too scored a hat trick. Emma Grant also got in on the action and added to the scoreline after having helped assist many of the others

A good start to the season and the ladies are feeling confident with their performances.

The Thirds are away to Oakway this Saturday

Learning curve in pre-season friendlies

Sep

THURROCK 1 0 – 7 COLCHESTER 1

Thurrock started well against a well drilled Colchester side who reside two leagues above in the East Hockey league. The Tees’ defence were put under pressure but newcomer Kyle Taylor, man of the man Andy Sargeant, Tommy Ing and Jordan Salmon worked tirelessly with Andy Gaut making a couple of fine saves. The score at half time was four nil.

During the summer, Thurrock picked up new players namely Dan O’Shaughnessy and Liam O’Reem who tried to start passing with Nick Stapleton and Barney Knowles in midfield. They managed to gain a few penalty corners but unfortunately Tees could not capitalise on these which lead to breaks where Colchester scored five more goals. Youngsters Liam Appleyard and Declan Millane tried their best to penetrate the Colchester defence but were out numbered on numerous occasions.

Tees now look forward to their first league game of the season at home against East London in Division 2S, 12.30 start.

THURROCK 2 3 – 0 WINCHMORE HILL & ENFIELD

With the opening game of the season just one week away, the men were far from full strength, even having to draft in some old faces, so to not only beat newly their newly promoted opponents, but to beat them convincingly, showed just how far the club has progressed in the last year or so. Last year the Seconds travelled to North London to play the same side in a pre-season friendly and were soundly beaten. This year the game looked as though it could go the same way, with Thurrock looking a shadow of the side which won 13 games in a row in the second half of last season. The visitors were unlucky to reach half time without finding the back of the net, but centre back Gary Ginsburgh wasn’t going to give the forwards any easy chances.

The second half couldn’t have been any more different from the first. Now the defence were supporting the midfield, allowing the quartet of Ashley Snell, Kevin Appleyard, Jeff West and Liam Appleyard to push forward and help Darren Higgins and Rick Smith in front of goal. Rick Smith put Thurrock a goal up early on in the second half, and from then on it was all one way traffic. Darren Higgins found the net twice on his return to his old team.

The Seconds will be hoping to carry on their winning streak next Saturday when East London visit Palmer’s college at 12.30.

Thurrock II 19 v Clacton II 1

Only a defeat to bottom of the league Clacton and a swing of 22 goals would prevent Thurrock from clinching the NE14 Hockey Div6 title, but the 2s were unstoppable on Saturday at palmer's. At half time the score was 8-0, and with the prospect of a plus 100 goal difference on the cards, the tees never let up.

Playing like this Thurrock can expect to mount a serious promotion challenge next year in division 5.

In the end the champions finished two goals short of their target, but a total of 118 goals for and 20 against, and 19 wins from 22 matches is a fantastic return for the season.

Skipper Keith Mager said "I couldn't be more proud of my team. To deliver 13 wins in a row is sensational."

THURROCK 3 v 0 CLACTON

Thurrock’s first eleven knew that the penultimate match of the season was an important one. Just one point would clinch the NE14HOCKEY Division SE3 league title and see them promoted.

Thurrock started nervously against a physical Clacton side who started playing the better hockey but were held back by strong defending from Tommy Ing, Andy Sargeant, Luke Danbrook and man of the match Jordan Salmon.

Goalkeeper Andy Gaut dealt with any attack with a couple of fine saves. After 20 minutes Thurrock’s Christian Jenkins broke the deadlock with an individual piece of skill which saw him score the first goal. The first half ended 1-0 to Thurrock.

After a half time talk by captain Steve Abbott Thurrock came out motivated and determined. Good team passing from Matt Gaut and Matthew Leaver enabled Steve Abbott to score Thurrock’s second goal settling any nerves the team previously had.

Tees continued to play convincingly with some great play midfield from Nicky Stapleton and Andre Rudder managing to consolidate the lead with a third goal from Christian Jenkins 10 minutes from full time.

Thurrock are now promoted to Division 2 South for the first time in nearly 30 years. Coach Andre Rudder said “Steve Abbott has been an excellent captain bringing the best out of his team. It has been a fantastic year for Thurrock Men’s hockey with both the Firsts and Seconds being crowned champions.

Numbers have been up and a young third eleven team have found their way in Division 8 with a new fourth team playing friendlies.

We are now on the lookout for next season’s players to strengthen the club throughout. Anyone interested should contact the club via the website www.thurrockhockey.com”.

On Saturday the Firsts are away to Upminster II at 1 pm

Maldon and little Baddow II - 3

Thurrock II - 5

Thurrock went into this top of the league clash needing 3 points to secure top spot for the 2011 season.

Things did not start out as planned as thurrock felt the early pressure from a well drilled Maldon team mixing age with the speed of youth and were 1-0 down after a powerful stike from the Maldon forward penetrated the Tee's keeper, skipper Keith Mager.

Thurrock had to regroup quickly after finding themselves behind, and started passing better, giving club leading scorer Michael Murray the opportunity to slot home from close range to send thurrock into the break at 1-1.

Thurrock tried to take the postives from the half but were found scratching their heads, one thing was for sure though , they were below par and need to up the tempo.

Thurrock blasted out of the blocks in the second half and were 2-1 up quickly thanks to the Ash Snell deflecting in a short corner. Soon afterwards young gun Dec Milane converted a penaltly flick to leave the score at 3-1.

As Tee's started to move the ball freely, Maldon's never say die attitude that has seen them promoted this year saw them pull back a goal from close range with 20 mins remaining.

Three goals in quick succession, two from Thurrock and one from Maldon, left the score line at Maldon 3 - Thurrock 5 and the Tees virtually guaranteed the top spot.

The 2s are scheduled to face bottom of the league Clacton on Saturday at 12.30 and only a huge defeat would allow Brentwood to take the silverware away from the Palmer's college base side.

Thurrock IIs 8 v Waltham Forest 1

The 2s faced Waltham Forest on saturday, who back in November were the last team to beat them before Thurrock's amazing stretch of victories saw them climb to the top of NE14 Hockey Div 6.

Last time round the 2s only had ten men available, one of whom was carrying an injury. This time, with Thurrock just two wins from clinching the title, a full strength side was sent out with revenge on their minds.

Waltham Forest almost went ahead when the ball ended up in the Thurrock goal, but the visiting forward sportingly owned up to kicking the ball and the goal was scrubbed from the score sheet.

Michael Murray opened the scoring for the Tees on 20 minutes with a strong shot on the turn. At the break the blacks were 2 up thanks to another goal from Murray.

The 2s were very comfortable in the second half, with Murray, Declan Millane and Rick Smith grabbing two more goals each. Waltham Forest managed to get one back from a short corner, but they rarely threatened the league's meanest defence.

With the 2s match next week is their penultimate game of this long and successful campaign, and a win at third placed Maldon & Little Baddow would ensure that at least one piece of silverware was heading to Thurrock.

Witham III- 0
Thurrock II - 1

After last weeks win and reclaiming top of the league from local rivals Brentwood , it was time for Thurrock to press the advantage away at Witham.

Tees found their stride quickly and were 1-0 up thanks to a Ricky Smith reverse flick inside the first 2 minutes. Tees continued to press in the first half to no reward thanks to the home goalkeeper, keeping his side alive time and time again.

After the break thurrock continued to press, but were again kept at bay by the Witham keeper. Things looked set to change when stand in skipper Mike Murray was bought down after taking the ball past the keeper , however only a short corner was given which Thurrock failed to convert.

Things got a little heated when thurrock were reduced to 9 men and Witham 10 , due to some conflicts of interest with the umpires, as both teams tried to push for the game changing goal. A smart save from andy gaut and some big tackles from ben knowles kept witham a bay .

The final whistle confirmed thurrock remained top of the league , and with brentwood only managing a draw at saffron waldon , thurrock are now 3 points clear with 3 games remaining

Next week thurrock play Waltham Forrest at palmers with a 1230 push back.

Mens 4th team a success dispite loss as Juniors impress

21
Feb
If Thurrock are able to field a 4th XI next season, then this friendly against a strong East London side will give men's club captain Andy Sargeant the confidence to let the next batch of the borough's young stars play their own natural game.

It is credit to youth coaches Tessa Ing, Louise Parrott and Luke Danbrook that Under 14s Tom Archer, Will Davis and Joe Harvey, all products of the Thurrock Academy, were the stars of the show, with Harvey even scoring one of Thurrock's five goals, coolly reverse flicking the ball home.
East London sent a mixture of talent, the best of whom usually play their hockey in NE14 Hockey Div 5SE, higher than Thurrock's 2nd XI.
The 4s were unlucky not to finish the first half with the scores level, but two very late goals put East London 4-2 up.

Thurrock's defence, marshalled ably by Dave Leeks, were kept busy by the talented attackers from the capital, but the Tees midfield of Archer, Davis, Harvey, Jonathon Wisbey, and the tiny but tenacious George Horgan outplayed their counterparts, showing maturity beyond their years.
Despite two late goals, Thurrock couldn't quite overcome their experienced opponents, losing 6-5, but gaining major praise from the sporting East London team.
The 4s will be playing again this saturday, 3.30pm push back at Palmer's. This would be an ideal opportunity for anybody over the age of 13 who would like to give hockey a go, to turn up and play a game. All are welcome at THC.

Mens 1's beat Phoenix in hard fought win

08
Feb
Thurrock Men's 1XI 2 - 1 Phoenix

Thurrock started the game in form with a win last week. The last time the two teams faced each other phoenix come out on top but Thurrock was determined to get their own back. The game started very physical from the off, tees started with some of their best hockey with some brilliant short sharp passing. Then from nowhere phoenix broke away from Thurrock’s defence and scored.

Thurrock kept their heads up and some great passing in the midfield from Andy Sergeant, Nick Stapleton and returning to the 1s Christian Jenkins. Thurrock continued to put pressure to the opposing defence, finally a break through from Nick ‘gravy’ Sheard who deflected the ball to lob the goalie to make it 1-1.
Phoenix did have a few chances but some strong defending from Luke Danbrok Tommy Ing and man of the match Jordan Salmon held them off. In the last few minutes of the game Jacob Agoro Matt Gaut and Steven Abbot linked up well putting pressure on the opposing defence, finally Thurrock was awarded a short corner then stepped up Jacob to flick the ball into the net. Now Thurrock was 2-1 up with minutes to go, tees held on to win.

This was a vital victory as NE14Hockey Div 3 title rivals Maldon & Little Baddow losing 4-1 to Redbridge & Ilford. Thurrock are now 8 points clear at the top of the league.
Next week Thurrock travel to the John Orwell sports centre to play Wapping at 4:00pm start.

Ladies 1
ST ALBANS 2 – 1 THURROCK

A promising start to the game as the Ladies travelled with a squad of 13! This enabled them to compete for long periods of time as the fresh legs of Charnie Horseman and Katie Lawrence certainly meant that the opposition could not relax their concentration.Thurrock competed with determination and flair but unfortunately St Albans took the lead. Lou Parrott found herself in an attacking role and duly put her team level with a fine goal. The game was played at a ‘seesaw’ pace and was at time almost quite thrilling but as in so many games recently a late goal meant that the ladies left with yet again no points.

Ladies I host Colchester I at Palmers on Saturday, 2pm push back

Ladies II
THURROCK II 0 – 2 WAPPING III

The game was always going to be hard and again the ladies fielded a squad of 13 which was rotated well and certainly kept the opposition guessing! The first half was fast and furious and good defensive work from Natalie Kerrin and Faye Tuffee kept the Wapping attack frustrated. Towards the end of the first half Wapping spotted a weakness and exploited with two goals in quick succession. The second half saw the Ladies much tighter and in fact some excellent ‘linking’ between player of the match Karen Lucking and Nicky Woodruff meant that the Wapping defence could never rest and had to remain alert. A fine save from Karen Richardson kept the score at 2-0.

The Seconds are away to Basildon II on Saturday

Ladies III
EAST LONDON III 2 – 0 THURROCK III

The Threes also went with a squad of 13 and again this was successful in maintaining a fast pace. The team played well and completely belied their ‘bottom of the league’ position. Charlotte Adnams, player of the match, worked tirelessly in the middle of the pitch and put through many searching passes but sadly not capitalised upon! During a substitution the opposition took advantage and took the lead much against the ‘run of play’. The Ladies fought back well and began to settle and mounted some attacks. Newcomer Carly Belcher supported her teammates admirably and was constantly breaking down the East London attacks and mounting her own. The Ladies looked so close to scoring and had numerous short corners and can only blame themselves for not winning this game! Despite the onslaught of corners East London had one breakaway and inevitably scored. To avoid relegation the ladies have to capitalise on these sort of games.

On Saturday the Thirds are at home to Redbridge & Ilford III, 12.30 pm

Mens 2's on sixth victory in a row

Thurrock II 2 - Redbridge & Ilford II 0

Thurrock's second XI recorded their sixth victory in a row, against no less than promotion rivals Redbridge & Ilford, to keep their title dreams very much alive on Saturday at palmer's college.
Third placed Redbridge lived up to their reputation of being tight at the back, but Thurrock played a very patient game, building their attacks slowly and rarely losing the ball in the first 15 minutes.
After being frustrated by dogged defending and goal keeping for most of the first half, it took the cunning of Ashley Snell to outwit Redbridge from a short corner to put the home side one up. Half time and great praise from Thurrock legend Andre Rudder saw the 2s strengthen their grip on this six pointer, and even though the visitors had periods of possession, they rarely troubled the solid defence of Gary Ginsburgh, Mike Hewing and Chris Smith.
Michael Murray put the points beyond doubt with ten minutes left on the clock when he tore through the redbridge back five and slammed the ball home.
The 2s now see promotion as the minimum expectation this season, with the NE14 Hockey Div6 title firmly in their sights.

Next weekend the 2s visit Romford 2s.

Thurrock - 3 v Redbridge & Ilford - 2

After the disappointment of last week's draw at University of Essex, the 1s were keen to get back to the sort of form that they started the season in and what better team to do it against than title rivals Redbridge & Ilford.
With Jacob Agoro back in attack and Steve Abbott fully fit, Tees set out to pressure the Redbridge defence from the start. The visitors did their best to win the ball in midfield, but Thurrock were like a pack of wolves, working together to keep the ball from their opponents. Redbridge could only manage a few break away attacks, and Thurrock were lucky not to go behind from one, when the quick number 13 surged through into the D, only to square it to a team mate who controlled the ball with his feet. Nick Stapleton and Jordan Salmon worked hard to keep the ball from Redbridge's main threat, much to his frustration, and without an easy outlet the reds found it hard to build attacks from the middle of the pitch.
The same could not be said for the home side though, as rather than relying on one or two very good players, Thurrock had eleven players on the pitch all playing some sensational hockey.
The blacks took the lead through Matt Gaut from a well worked short corner, then continued to pile the pressure on, but the visiting goalkeeper was having an outstanding game, and were it not for him the score would have been more than just 1-0 at half time.
The Tees doubled their advantage early in the second half when Jacob Agoro finally found a way past the away keeper. Redbridge pulled one back from a quick penalty corner routine, only for the Tees to strike again, this time a superb goal made by the hard working Andy Sargeant and deflected into the top corner by skipper Steve Abbott.
It could be argued that Redbridge finished the stronger side, but for all their efforts they could only manage to grab a consolation goal at the end, with Keith Mager in goal earning himself the man of the match champagne.

Next week the 1s entertain Phoenix at Palmers College at 12.30

Uni of Essex II - 0 v Thurrock II - 10

Thurrock visited the Wivenhoe campus looking to continue their recent run of form, and they did not disappoint the crowd.
From the start to finish thurrock dominated all aspects of the game, with stand in keeper Dave Leeks making 3 saves all game.
Man of the match Christian Jenkins had a positive impact in his first game since coming back from injury helping himself to 6 goals.
The others fell to Liam Birch, Kevin Appleyard and Tom Madden to secure a fine victory.

Thurrock keep the pressure on Brentwood for the top spot in Div 6, trailing by just two points having both played 14 games. With all to play for Thurrock host Redbridge and Ilford next week at Palmers in an 11am push back.

Thurrock II - 5 v Chelmsford V - 0

On a cold and windy morning at palmers college, Thurrock came up against 11 outfield players and no goalkeeper for the second time this season. However Chelmsford are a well drilled unit and made the Tees work hard for their opportunities.

Thurrock's first goal came after a break away run from rookie jeff west, who found Barney Knowles in the middle of the park with a pin point pass. Knowles then provided the killer ball for Michael Murray to tuck away into the bottom right hand corner.

The home side continued to mount pressure in the middle of the park thanks to the father and son combo of Liam and man of the match Kevin Appleyard, who supplied Murray with the perfect ball to double the lead.

The 2s ended the half 2-0 up, but knew that they should have a bigger margin, and after a motivational team talk by the experienced Kevin Appleyard, returned to their normal fluent style of play, cutting the 7 man chelmsford midfield to shreads. With no goal keeper to beat, Thurrock added 3 goals in the second half with Murray completing a sensational hat trick, his third of the season, and new boy Ricky Smith weighing in with a brace of his own.

Thurrock ended the game 5-0 winners and continue their recent run of great results which sees them hot on the heels of Brentwood IVs.

Next week the 2s play University of Essex at the Wivenhoe campus.

Clacton II - 0 v Thurrock II - 7

The 2s had to play two games in as many days due to cancellations in December, and the rustiness showed in the first half on saturday, against bottom of the league clacton. Thurrock expected to be more than 1-0 up at half time, but to say that the forwards played like clowns would be an insult to the noble art of circus showmanship. The second half was a totally different story though, and despite a heroic performance by the home goalkeeper, the Tees ran out 7-0 winners, with Michael Murray bagging five, and Ashley Snell and man of the match Jeff West scoring one each.

Thurrock II - 4 v Maldon and Little Baddow II - 2

On sunday the IIs took on a very strong Maldon and Little Baddow in a must win game with both teams competing for second position in the league. The Tees started as they had left off the previous day, scoring inside the first five minutes with an Ashley Snell pile driver inside the Maldon D from a short corner. Five minutes later, with Snell demanded a pass in a scoring position and found the net again to double the 2s lead.

Maldon didn't give up the fight though, and with Andy Gaut on the sideline, stand in defender Ben Knowles failed to make a decisive tackle which led to an easy one on one for the visitors to pull the score back to 2-1.

The second half saw the reintroduction of Gaut in defence, and Thurrock again controlled the match from the middle of the park. With the teams level on points in the league, both sets of players were up for a battle. On the hour Maldon's big number 3 was lucky not to get his marching orders after barging Gaut to the ground. The visitors drew level with fifteen minutes left, but it was the men in the black shirts who were piling on all the pressure, even though some could barely run after the weekend's exploits.

It looked as though the points would be shared when chance after chance for Thurrock was either saved or was put wide, but the team could not be faulted for effort, summed up by a diving effort which Declan Millane couldn't keep below the cross bar, but then the home support went crazy when the Tees grabbed the lead in the most unexpected fashion, a pea roller of a shot from Millane which the keeper let roll under his foot, mistakenly thinking that the shot was from outside the D.

Thurrock then scored their goal of the season , tackling maldon from the restart , thurrock ripped open maldon with 6 top draw passes for Millane to slot home to secure his second for the game.
There was still time for maldon to threaten the Thurrock goal, but a perfectly timed tackle by Ben Knowles made amends for his howler earlier.

A good tough win for thurrock which sees them take second position the league, just three points behind leaders Brentwood IVs

Next week the 2s visit Brentwood Vs

Frozen Temperatures don't phase Mens 1 XI in a 2-0 win

Nov

With most other games being cancelled due tothe winter conditions, the Men’s 1st XI travelled to sunny Clacton in a toptable clash. The Tee's went into this game with a dip in form and looking for agood win against the old foe Clacton.

This clash was always going to be a fast pacedphysical game, but it was Clacton that where the quickest out of the blocksputting the Tee's defence under pressure, but this was mopped up by the defencetime and time again. This frustrated the home team as every strong passingattack was rewarded with nothing.

After the first few minutes the Tee's upped theirgame and put together some fantastic passing moves of their own coming closenumerous times but where thwarted by a resolute Clacton defence.

The Tee's came out after a inspiring half timeteam talk and their tenacity was rewarded in the second half time when CaptainSteve Abbott pounced on to a rebound and rifled a low shot past the keeper togive the team some breathing room. The two teams traded attack after attack foranother 20 minutes, with Man of the Match Keeper Andy Gaut making a string of savesto deny Clacton an equaliser. After an injury to striker Jacob Agoro, 1st teamdebutant Dave Leeks took to the field to stretch his legs.

With 2 minutes left on the clock Matt Gaut poppedup in the D to deflect the ball past the keeper to seal the points for a hardfought win.

The Men's 1st XI next host Upminster at 11am at Palmers before the mid season break.

Thurrock 1 v 3 Maldon and Little Baddow

Thurrock came into this match with four points above Maldon & Little Baddow, playing some great hockey from the last couple of weeks, but all ended with some bad decisions and a 3-1 loss. T’s were up for a big game and it all went wrong after 10 mins when a short corner was awarded for a bad tackle from Man of the Match Luke Danbrook which Maldon put away with great finshing. Five minutes later and Maldon went on the break with a 3 on 2 in the ‘D’.
Keeper Andy Gaut had to come out of his goal and make a save when the Maldon player hit the ball at goal, but Luke Danbrook saved it on the line. Five minutes from half-time Maldon scored their second of the game from a short corner. A half-time team talk from captain Steve Abbot saw Thurrock come out fighting and their goal came from the captain himself, but with attack after attack Thurrock just could not get another goal. Maldon kept pressing hard and with the defence light, due to Thurrock pressing forward, Maldon got a harsh penalty flick for left back Andy Sargeant pushing the Maldon player in the back. 3-1 and it was all over. With the T’s defence of Andy Sargeant, Tommy Ing and Luke Danbrook playing really well it was a close call for man of the match, but with one vote in it Luke Danbrook received it.
Thurrock play away at Clacton on Saturday with the hope their form will return.

Waltham Forest 2 – 0 Thurrock 11

It was a day to forget for the young Thurrock side, as they travelled away to Waltham Forest.
After three postcode changes Thurrock turned up to discover that only 10 men had made it to the ground successfully, as time was also tight due to travelling Thurrock had little time to prepare for the match and many had to change on the side of the pitch.
This aside Thurrock were put under early pressure, not because of the missing man but down to basic errors and poor distribution. Tees then got going after the 15 minute mark and pressed Waltham Forest and created the best opportunites withTom Maddon unluckly not to score after a well placed ball from Barney Knowles found him in the D,Thurrock ended the half on a high with the score at 0-0.
Thurrock then started the half as they finished with Phil West carving inroads down the right and successfully winning short corners which they failed convert, Tees mantained this pace into the last 10 minutes when tired legs began to show and the effects of having one less man on the field took its toll. The home side hit Thurrock hard on the counter attack and a disheartend Thurrock saw the ball end up in the top left corner.
Waltham Forest then doubled their lead after a loose ball was picked up and slotted into the goal from close range. Thurrock continued to apply pressure and saw a late volley of shots stopped and blocked by the opposing defence.
Thurrock now slip to third in the league six points behind the leaders, and play second in the table Maldon and Little Baddow at Palmers this Saturday at 12.30 in a must win game for the Tees.

UPMINSTER V 4 – 2 THURROCK III

Thurrock played their best game of the season and were unlucky not to take points from the unbeaten leaders of NE14HOCKEY Div 8SE. Upminster dominated the early play and defenders George McAllister, Sam Webb and Oliver Smith had to make some strong challenges to repel a series of attacks. Midway through the half an attack down the right led to a cross which bobbled into the D and although keeper Declan Salmon, got his foot to it, the ball trickled over the line.
Thurrock were spurred into action and drew level within five minutes when Gary Venus made a run through the middle and passed to father Jimmy Venus who laid the ball off for uncle John Venus to hammer it past the advancing keeper. Both teams battled hard but no further goals were scored before half time. In the second half Upminster reorganised their formation and stretched Thurrock .
After 10 minutes a missed tackle on the 25 metre line allowed the speedy attacker to enter the area and flick the ball past Salmon to make it 3-1. Thurrock continued to work hard and Mat Skinner dribbled through the middle and hit the ball to Michael Fleming who was unlucky to see his shot go inches wide. Thurrock gained a series of penalty corners which eventually produced a goal for Jimmy Venus. Thurrock battled to get an equalising goal but could not penetrate a strong Upminster defence. In the final minute a breakaway by Upminster caught Thurrock on the hop and although Salmon saved the initial shot the rebound fell to the stick of the attacker who smashed the ball into the net
Next Saturday home to Old Loughtonians Woodsmen at 2pm

THURROCK IV 0 – 3 UPMINSTER VI

For the first time in four years Thurrock were able to field a fourth men’s side for this friendly against Upminster VI who normally play in NE14HOCKEY Div 9. Upminster made the early pace and went into the lead after only 10 minutes. Thurrock gradually got used to playing together and a run up the right by Harry Holloway produced a cross for veteran Dave Shatwell, making a welcome return after a year out due to illness, to shoot just wide.
An attack by Upminster just before half time led to a mishit shot which bobbled past keeper Bob Leeks and into the net. After an uplifting half-time talk by coach Rick Clubb, Thurrock came out strongly in the second half and Joe Harvey intercepted a pass on the halfway line and ran through the Upminster defence before crossing to Lawrence Smith who was unlucky to shoot just wide. Upminster mounted a strong attack but the final pass was intercepted by Tom Archer and moved back up the pitch by Hamish Patel who produced an inch-perfect pass for Shatwell who beat the keeper only to see his shot hit the post and rebound to safety. With five minutes to go, Upminster added a third goal from a short corner. The team are hoping for another good performance next week when they play against Witham at 3.30.

Mens Ists

Redbridge & Ilford I 2 – 4 Thurrock I

This win puts Thurrock at the top of the NE14HOCKEY Div. 3 SE table on goal difference from Maldon & Little Baddow scoring just one more goal.

Thurrock’s Men’s first XI went into this fixture knowing it would be a hard fought battle to take all three points with the opposition’s recent results.

The game started with the home side dominating possession and were rewarded with a short corner, which left the Tee’s one nil down.

This prompted the Tee’s into action replying with a short corner of their own through Captain Steven Abbott. This lead to battle for midfield domination which again the home team had the better of, being rewarded with a short corner when after a scrappy few tackles the home side slipped the ball into the side of the goal.

Again Thurrock rallied to level the scores at 2-2 with short corner ace Jacob Agoro scoring and this was how it finished at half time.

After the break the Tee’s came out as the dominate force as they have been in the past few weeks, with Matt Gaut breaking through in midfield and defence to score a single handed goal to lift the Tee’s performance still.

Next was the turn of Matt Leaver to give the Thurrock a two goal cushion going into the final 10 minutes.

The home side hit the Tee’s hard for the last 10 minutes including five short corners in the last five minutes which was well dealt with by Tommy Ing, Jordan Salmon, Luke Danbrook and Man of the Match Andy Gaut.

The Tee’s visit Phoenix next week to build on a fantastic start. Push back 2.30 in Braintree.

Mens II

THURROCK II 9 – 1 UNIVERSITY OF ESSEX II

After a less then attractive win last week, T’s were expecting a tough game from the normally well drilled university side, however this was not the case. Thurrock dominated the game from start to finish, with sharp passing and movement that would not look out of place at the Commonwealth Games.

Thurrock went in at half time 4-0 to the good after goals from Declain Millane, Nick Sheard and Ashley Snell with the Thurrock keeper failing to touch the ball. Things got even better for Thurrock after the break with two quick goals giving them a firm 6-0 foothold in the game.

The University did hit back after defensive error saw the keeper called into action for the first only to see the ball trickle over the line. However this had no impact on the game as Thurrock went on to score another three before the full-time whistle for a comprehensive win. Both Declain Millane and Ashley Snell completing well-earned hat tricks and a goal from Gary Ginsburgh. A win that puts them top of the league and early league contenders.

Next Saturday away to Redbridge & Ilford II at 2.30.

THURROCK III 3 – 8 SAFFRON WALDEN VI

Thurrock started this NE14HOCKEY Div. 8 SE game strongly and went into the lead after only five minutes when a cross by Jimmy Venus was collected by Tom Tilby who beat the keeper to get his first goal for Thurrock. However their lead did not last long when an attack by Saffron Walden led to a goalmouth melee and the ball was forced over for the equaliser. Saffron Walden reorganised their formation and took control of the midfield keeping Thurrock in their own half.

Two goals in quick succession gave the visitors the lead before Michael Fleming pulled one back from a short corner to make the score 2-3. Despite Thurrock efforts to make headway the well-organised Walden midfield quickly cut out any threat and pressurised Thurrock into defence. In the last five minutes of the half Saffron Walden added two quick goals to make it 2-5 at the break.

The visitors continued the second half in the same vein and left the Thurrock defence chasing shadows as they added two more to their total within 10 minutes. Michael Fleming gave Thurrock some hope when he seized on a through ball from Liam Birch and hammered the ball past the keeper from the edge of the area. Thurrock began to look the stronger side and gained a series of short corners however they were unable to turn their advantage into goals.

In the final minute an attack by Thurrock was cut out and the ball was rapidly sent up the field to the right winger who cut into the D and scored from a narrow angle to compound Thurrock’s woes.

Next Saturday at home to Saffron Walden 7, 2pm pushback

MENS I 5 v 2 ESSEX UNIVERSITY I

The score line slightly flattered Thurrock’s Men’s 1st XI as it was far from the normal slick passing side we are used to seeing. However it was the home side that took advantage of a defensive mistake, with Christian Jenkins on hand to tap the ball into an empty net.

The goal failed to improve the team’s performance and a dubious flick was awarded to the away side which they cooly converted. The score only stayed level for around five minutes after a well worked move culminated in Matt Gaut getting the faintest of touches from a Steve Abbott cross.

With half time approaching Thurrock showed signs of improvement and increased their lead with a well taken Michael Murray goal from a Christian Jenkins cross.

Now on the attack a miss-placed pass lead to the opposition catching most of the home side on the break. A last ditch tackle from Luke Danbrook lead to the award of a short corner leaving the University side just one goal adrift.

Another Thurrock attack saw Matt Gaut slot the ball pass the keeper after good work from central midfielder Nick Stapleton. Leaving the score at half-time 4-2.

In the second half Thurrock controlled the play and looked more defensively sound, any attacks that did get through the defence of Danbrook, Ing and Salmon were dealt with by keeper Andy Gaut.

Christian Jenkins scored his second of the game following a rebound from a short corner. Matt Gaut completed his hat-trick and Man of the Match performance sending a Murray cross into the top corner of the net.

CHELMSFORD IV 1 – 3 THURROCK II

The 2s visited Chelmer Park to take on Chelmsford’s fifth team on Saturday afternoon. Chelmsford had opted to play with 11 outfield players and no goal keeper, but far from being easy for Thurrock to get the ball into the goal, the home side defended doggedly, preventing Tees from getting a clear shot on target.

It was Chelmsford who opened the scoring after 15 minutes, when defender Neil Donovan was left exposed and in a two-on-one situation.
Chris Smith was thrown into attack and made a big difference, but the defence weren’t going to give him any room to get a shot on target. However Smith kept plugging away, and eventually got the equaliser with five minutes left in the first half.

The second half was very frustrating for Thurrock, who in their desperation for a second goal reverted to playing some very ugly hockey. Declan Millane found the back of the net, but the umpires had spotted that the ball had actually gone through a hole in the side netting. Chelmsford came close to regaining the lead on the break, but poor finishing let them down on at least two occasions. Thurrock decided to go all out for short corners, as it was obvious that they couldn’t find another goal in open play, and it was Smith again who used all his experience to win a string of them. Declan Millane lifted the first over the goal, but Gary Ginsburgh showed him how to do it next time, at last giving the Tees the lead. Millane then went on to score the third when Chelmsford were already beaten, but the scoreline flattered Thurrock on a day when they should really have scored a hat-full.

Still, a win is a win, and the 2s, like their first team counterparts, are unbeaten in the league still.

The skipper will demand a better performance next week against University of Essex at Palmer’s.

BRENTWOOD 6th 3 – 0 THURROCK III

Thurrock began this game strongly with forwards Jimmy Venus and Michael Fleming putting pressure on the home defence whilst defenders Rick Clubb, Sam Webb and Declan Salmon cut out any potential danger. After 15 minutes a mis-hit Thurrock clearance fell kindly for the Brentwood attacker who rounded keeper Keith Mager for the opening goal. Thurrock worked hard to get back into the game but came up against a strong Brentwood defence. Thurrock went further behind 10 minutes later following a goalmouth melee which led to the ball being nudged over the line as Thurrock’s defence awaited the award of a free hit for an offence by an attacker. In the second half Thurrock modified their formation with Rick Clubb moving into midfield with Tom Tilby and Michael Fleming playing deeper. This had the effect of giving Thurrock the upper hand and they gained a string of short corners making Brentwood work hard to keep the ball out. With five minutes to go the Brentwood centre forward gained his hat trick when he scored from a well-struck short corner.

LADIES I 1 – 3 BROXBOURNE

The ladies fought well in a very evenly fought contest but a lapse of concentration for a five minute period resulted in them being two goals down. Some good midfield play ensured that the ladies always remained a threat and eventually some fine solo work from Katie Jacks led to Meera Sud pouncing on the ball to fire home a consolation goal.

LADIES II 0 – 3 SOUTHEND

For the third consecutive week the ladies have fielded a different team. This has led to a period of unsettlement and has required the experienced players to lead the way. Sally Willett had a fine controlling game as sweeper and player of the match Ally Bonner worked tirelessly up front. The defecit was kept low when keeper Karen Richardson returning from injury made a great save from a penalty flick.

Next week the ladies are away to Maldon and they go determined to break this losing run.

BASILDON III 2 – 0 LADIES III

The Thirds arrived knowing that the game was going to be an uphill struggle as they only had 10 players and to make matters worse the opposition had two substitutes! The ladies placed all the experienced players in defence to initially stem the flow of attack. This tactic worked well and the game settled to be fairly well contested. The strength of Basildon’s attack was ‘squashed’ for long periods of time and joint player of the match Joyce Sackey was unbeatable as she stepped in and made time after time inch perfect tackles. The other joint player of match, Kerry Dent was equally frustrating to Basildon. Dent was proving to be unbeatable as the last line of defence. Towards the end of the first half the ladies were tiring and an unmarked player slipped the ball past Dent. Coach Sharon Judd gave inspiration to the ladies at half-time and this inspired the young forwards and Lauren Marshall went close to equalising. Eventually the tired legs let in a second goal. An exhausting game for the ladies but one to take some pride from.

Minis

Thurrock HC again teamed up with Southend HC to host the first fixtures in the new Alliance Sports Mini League season. Teams from Brentwood, Havering and Tower Hamlets came to Thurrock.

The day started well for Thurrock and Southend U10s with both boys and girls winning against Brentwood. The boys then went on to draw their following two games. However the girls were not so lucky and lost their two remaining games. However, all the children played well and had an enjoyable day.

Thurrock and Southend U12 boys had a promising start drawing with Brentwood, but were not able to follow this up losing their next two games. Thurrock and Southend’s U12 girls got off to a winning start against Brentwood and followed this up with promising games against Havering and Tower Hamlets drawing both.

The children will continue to improve their skills whilst training at Palmers every Thursday night at 7pm.

CROSTYX 2 1 – 3 THURROCK 1

It was a tough game to start the season in NE14HOCKEY Division 3SE for the Men’s 1s, after a long summer off. Thurrock started brightly, moving the ball around the defence and midfield, whilst keeping the ball from the opposition. Unfortunately, it was Crostyx who scored first as they broke quickly down the right wing, leaving Thurrock defence outnumbered as the Crostyx striker chipped the ball over the goalkeeper, Andy Gaut, as he tried to close him down. Thurrock then started to respond by putting the Crostyx defence under a lot of pressure; their goalkeeper just keeping them in the game as the first half came to an end.

Thurrock started the second half as they ended the first, with a centre midfield partnership of Jacob Agoro and ‘Man of the Match’ Nick Stapleton controlling the game and giving the Thurrock wingers and strikers lots of the ball as the pressure built up on their opponents. This pressure then paid off as captain Steve Abbott scored from a well-worked short corner, levelling the score. The local team continued to press the Crostyx defence while the defence of Tommy Ing, Luke Danbrook and Jordan Salmon continued to stop any attack that come against them. Thurrock’s pressure then paid off as the new boy, Christian Jenkins, put the ball into the bottom corner after a clever dummy from Michael Murray, to eventually bring Thurrock 2-1 up. Thurrock then sealed the game after many close chances as Matt Gaut scored with not much of the goal to aim at. The local team finished with the perfect start to the season.

Next week the Firsts are at home to University of Essex, 2 pm start

Mens II

THURROCK 2 2 – 0 Brentwood 5

The 2s opening tie of the season in the NE14 HOCKEY Division 6SE was the potentially tricky visit of newly promoted Brentwood 5s. Unlike the start of last, thurrock were able to field a near full strength side, and although the team hadn’t played together in months they quickly imposed themselves on the visitors, taking the lead through Ashley Snell’s effort from the top of the D. Brentwood were given a lifeline when Mike Hewing deliberately brought down an attacker in his own D, but skipper Keith Mager saved the resulting penalty flick to maintain the one goal advantage going into half time.

Thurrock had two new players on show at Palmer’s, midfielders Jeff West and Nick Sheard, and both impressed their new team mates, West with his impressive work rate, and Sheard with his calm distribution. The 2s put the points beyond doubt when Tom Madden capped a fine performance with a well taken goal.

Next week Chelmsford host the 2s.

THURROCK 3 1 – 1 ROCHFORD CASUALS

Both teams were playing their first game in NE14HOCKEY Division 8SE Thurrock having been promoted last season and Rochford being relegated. The game was hard fought from the start with both teams battling hard. As Rochford drove forward defenders George McAllister, Declan Salmon and Sam Webb had to be alert to put in a string of timely tackles. After 15 minutes a clearance by Salmon was collected by Jimmy Venus who slipped the ball for Michael Fleming to drive into the area and lay on a pass for Lawrence Jackson to beat the keeper from close range. Thurrock continued to have the majority of possession but could not add to their single goal by half time. In the second half Rochford reorganised their formation and were much more threatening but strong defending kept them at bay. With 10 minutes to go, a quickly taken free hit by Rochford found Thurrock out of position allowing the speedy attacker to flick the ball into the net for the equaliser. In the last minute a similar situation almost led to Rochford claiming the points as a shot from the edge of the area went just wide of the Thurrock post.
